New Kids Class for 2012

Due to popular demand an exciting new kids class has been added to the timetable for 2012.
Along with myself newly promoted BJJ purple belt & MMA black belt Dave Ward will be
taking on the job of instructing our kids.
This extra class will give much more flexibility in the teaching structure & allow all under 13 year olds to train regularly twice a week. With advanced kids also permitted to train in Wednesday's adults class, strictly at instructors say so.

New kids class: Monday's 5:30-6:20pm, starting 9/01/2012

A full timetable/price list is available at the gym.

Looking forward to seeing all in 2012

End of Year Grading

BREAKING NEWS: Dave Ward receives MMA BLACK BELT.

I was delighted to promote Dave to Black Belt in MMA Monday 19th December. Dave is one of the clubs 40 something & proud of it members. But let me tell you , has the go of someone half his age. He has an extensive knowledge of both striking & grappling arts & more importantly has the rare understanding of how to blend it altogether.
I could go on & on about what Dave has to offer on the mat, but more important are his attributes in life. A great family man & an exceptional human being. Well done Dave you are a cherished friend & integral part of our club.

Well done to all that participated in the recent end of year grading. On the night several white & blue belts received stripes on their belts after displaying some exceptional technique & showing that the club has some highly skilled future colour belts.

After an awesome display of Jiu-Jitsu technique & an almost brutal 25 minutes of sparring two new proud Blue Belts emerged. Joey Agostino stamped his name as one of the clubs top up & coming grapplers with an absolutely perfect grading.
Abdul Aboss capped off an awesome year of competion & takes out the clubs most improved this year. Well done guy's, now the journey begins.

Andre Powell & Dave Ward, without a dout two of the clubs most dedicated & motivated members topped off the night with a superb demonstration of Jiu-Jitsu & some very high level wrestling against the clubs hierarchy. I was very proud to promote both Andre & Dave to Purple Belt in BJJ.

Also a big congrats to Paul Roditis & Joey Agostino on their new MMA grades.
Special thanks to Agassi for expertise on the bbq & everyone in attendance for making
such a great night.

Looking foreward to seeing all in 2012
Coach Simon

Grading Results

Well done to all the kids that participated in the kids grading on Friday. A total of nine new belts were awarded on the night with a special mention going to Zakky Azimi on achieving his Green Belt.
We have a great bunch of kids currently training & I'm very proud to have you on our mat.
Look out for the new kids class starting in 2012, details will be posted soon.

Rob & Ara Training in the States

Last week we said goodbye to our good friends & training partners Robert Sabaruddin & Ara Aroutiounian as they set off for nine months full time training & competing in the USA.
Rob, 22 & Ara, 18 have been training with me for four years & in that time I've seen them transition not only into elite level atheletes but maybe even more importantly into mature well balanced human beings.
It's been a pleasure having them on our mat & I wish them all the best on their training endeavours abroad & can't wait to see them upon return.
Keep an eye on the website as we track their progress via Rob's blog.

Competition Results

Well done to Abdul Aboss taking 2nd place at the IBJJF International in Melbourne last weekend. Abdul has continued to set the standard in the white belt heavyweight division
this year with some outstanding 1st & 2nd places. Clearly Abdul is ready to make the step
to the next level. Keep an eye out on the next grading.

Ara turns Purple

Last night I was privileged to award Ara Aroutiounian with his BJJ purple belt. Ara has had a stand out twelve months, starting with winning the teens blue belt division at last years nationals. Backed up with some excellent performances in the adults divisions as a 17 year old.
Since then a short training trip to the States & an 18th birthday, Ara has come on in leaps & bounds, winning this years Nationals in the adult blue belt division & more recently totally dominating the gi & no gi divisions at the ISJA world cup with an extraordinary display of technical grappling.
I've had the pleasure of teaching Ara for the past four years since he walked into the gym as a shy yet eager 14 year old & have watched him turn into not only a high level competitor but also a humble & respectable young man. I'm proud to have helped guide him on his grappling journey & cherish his & his Dads (Agasi's) friendship.
Wear your new belt with pride Ara you thoroughly deserve it.

ISJA World Cup Champions

The ISJA, aka ISKA, is done & dusted for another three years & our club featured prominently in the winners circle.
Saturday was the kids comp. & first to be crowned ISJA world cup champion was Zakky Azimi with a very dominant points win in his division. Zakky has been training really hard this year & thoroughly deserves his success.
Llyten Smith had a hard fought match against the eventual winner of his division going down in a close match by only one advantage.
Jake Farnsworth was next to take the title of ISJA world cup champion with an assertive
thirty eight second submission to wrap up the title. It was great to see Jake finally get a match against someone close to his weight, (only 2kgs heavier).
Bobby Azimi was unable to compete in BJJ due to age restrictions so decided to have a go at Sumo but finished unplaced.

Sunday was the adults comp. & Peter Shua wasted no time taking the title demonstrating all the techniques we have been working in class lately & submitting both his opponents with relative ease.
Shuan Galardi & Thomas Zarzecki both took second place after two action packed matches. Both narrowly losing on points to some very experienced blue belts.
Without a doubt the standout competitor of the day was Ara Aroutiounian taking out the Gi & no Gi championships. Submitting four opponents & winning one on points on his way to winning both divisions.

A great result from all our awesome athletes. You have done yourselves & our club very proud.

Pan-Pac Results

A great effort was put in by our athletes making the return trip to Melbourne to compete in Australia's biggest combined gi & no gi comp.

Rob achieved 1st place in his no gi division, Ara unplaced & Abdul 2nd place in his gi division.

Well done guy's, once again you have done our club proud.

Pan-Pacs

Good luck to Rob, Ara & Abdul, making the journey back to Melbourne to compete in the
Pan-Pacs this weekend. The comp will be held over three days with gi, no gi & open weight divisions. Keep an eye on the blog for results.

Nine competitors, nine medals

What a fantastic weekend we had, an awesome result from our club. Nine competitors, 5 golds, 3 silvers, 1 bronze.
In the kids divisions all our competitors had to fight up weight divisions due to lack of numbers. Although I understand this sometimes has to happen, at their age it can be quite a disadvantage. But it didn't stop our young athletes achieving some great results. Bobby Azimi in his usual form submitted his way through his opponents & took the gold medal, Zakky Azimi put on a dominating performance & showed that he is now a force to be reckoned with on the competition scene & won a much deserved gold medal. Jake Farnsworth got the fastest submission in the kids divisions, rear naked choke in 13 seconds, but had his back against the wall in the final against an opponent almost 2 years older & 15kg heavier, he hung in there for the duration of the match to receive a silver medal. Antonio Maujalli, new to our club. took bronze in teens division.

In the adults divisions, Allen Robida, also new to our club, put in 5 hard weeks competition training with us & achieved a silver medal. Ara Aroutiounian step up to the Adults this year after winning the teens title last year & backed it up with fine display of grappling to clinch the gold medal. Andre Powell inspired the whole arena, down on points, choking out his opponent from underneath to advance into the final & take a silver medal. Andre also received a standing ovation when John Will awarded him with the encouragement award at the presentation, a prouder moment I can't imagine. Robert Sabaruddin in only his second purple belt comp. showed the sort of composure that makes him such a great athlete as he executed his game plan with precision on his way to winning the gold medal. Andrew Fu dealt out a lesson to his opponents on the technical side of Jiu-Jitsu that as a referee I have rarely seen performed in competition on his way to taking the gold medal in the purple belt masters.

The following day Rigan held an awesome seminar & it was great to be on the mat with 67 other grappling addicts. It was also fantastic to spend some time with my great friends Anthony, Nicky & Rohan Lange, Peter King & of coarse my wonderful wife who tirelessly puts up with & mostly organisers my many obsessions.

Many thanks to John & Melissa Will, Rigan Machado & all that make this such a wonderful event.

Recent Seminars

It was great to catch up with my good friend Stephen Kamphuis on his recent visit to Australia. Stephen conducted a very technical seminar at our club that inspired all in attendance, selflessly sharing with us his world championship game. He is a world class competitor and person and just seems to age like a fine wine. It was a pleasure to have him on our mat and I look forward to catching up with him again in the near future.

John Will also held a recent seminar and in his usual style delivered a top class inspiring seminar. John took as through Rigan's takedown system and some great step in the hole open guard pass theories. I was lucky enough to spend six hours on the mat with John that day, wow Jiu-Jitsu heaven.

Anyway time to pack the bags in preparation for the Asian Pacific Championships and Rigan Machado seminar in Melbourne this weekend. Three hundred odd competitors and a room full of colour belts with Rigan, Should be a great weekend.

John Will Seminar

Please note that I posted the wrong time for Johns Seminar next Saturday.
Correct time is 12-2pm.

Grading Results

Well done to all that particapated in Monday nights grading. The standard was exceptionally high & there was some great technique displayed by all.

Special mention to Chris Bonomo & Thomas Zarzecki both receiving blue belts after a grueling 25 minutes of wrestling. With only four white belts in the class they were pushed to the limits by the many colour belts in attendance. The blue belt grading is very much a show of mental strength, almost an initiation to Jiu-Jitsu & both Chris & Thomas came through with flying colours. Well done guy's, it's great to have both of you as part of our team.

Also a hugh congratulations to Andrew Fu on his promotion to purple belt. Andrews technique was perfect & he finished off the night with three awesome wrestles against purple, brown & black belts. Andrew's seach for perfection & never ending approach to better himself epitomizes the BJJ purple belt & I'm honoured to have on our mat.

Tournament Results

Well done to all that competed on the weekend, seven entries, six medals. In the kids division, Bobby Azimi 3rd, Connor Martel 2nd, Zakky Azimi gets a very well deserved 1st & Jake Farnsworth 3rd.

In the adults, a good effort by Pete Shua & Ara Aroutiounian, both unplaced. Robert Sabaruddin stepped up for
his first comp as a purple belt in good form achieving 2nd in his weight division & 2nd in the open division.

It's time to get back on the mat & start working on any weaknesses exposed by the pressure of competion in
preparation for the Machado National.

All this month is syllabus work & plenty of technical cardio wrestling.
So if your grading, especially for blue belt, start working on your fitness.

Updated Grading Results

Last Monday I had the pleasure of awarding Robert Sabaruddin with his purple belt in BJJ. Rob works tirelessly in his pursuit of grappling excellence & I'm very proud to have had a hand in his growth over the last three & half years. I look forward to seeing him continue to raise the bar as he progresses as an elite grappler.

Friday nights kids class produced four new grades. Zakky Azimi Red Belt, Bobby Azimi & Jake Brown Yellow belt & Ibrahim Azimi 1 stripe on his white belt. As usual all the boys demonstrated round after round of superb wrestling. Well done to all, the technical level in our kids class is very high.

Saying of the week: "It is better to light a candle than to curse the dark"

Coach Simon

Rob wins at Tuffa 10

Last night we traveled to Newcastle for Robs fight in Tuffa 10. We were the 3rd fight on the card so it was straight to the change rooms, wrap his hands, a quick warm up (not on the 2 disgustingly dirty mats supplied, surely atleast 4 clean mats would not be a big ask) & it was time to enter the cage.

Rob wasted no time, taking the fight straight to his opponent. After an exchange of striking Rob scored 2 perfectly executed double legs, took the back & submitted his opponent via rear naked choke.
Rob showed great maturity in the fight executing his game plan pefectly & achieving a fantastic result.
All in all a very deserved win for his hard/smart training. Well done Rob & thanks to the team for your support,
the club is very proud of you.

Coach Simon

Open mat closed

There will be no open mat today as the team makes the journey to Newcastle
for Robs MMA fight tonight. Check the blog tomorrow for results.

Rob ready to rumble

Rob has been training hard & is ready for his upcoming fight this weekend at Newcastle in Tuffa 10.
Thanks to everyone that has helped with his preparation. Try to come along & support him as it always
helps to have a few cheers in the crowd. For tickets & info visit www.tuffamma.com.au

kids Grading

Congrats to Max, Connor, Thomas, Matthew & Kai on achieving their new colour belts in the Kids class on Friday night. All of you performed very well & displayed some great spirited wrestling. Your new ranks will
be updated on the website soon.

Events BJJ results

Well done to all our athletes that competed at the Events BJJ comp. on the weekend. Unfortunately I didn't get to coach most of the matches due to a busy schedule of refereeing. None the less some great results were achieved. In the kids divisions, Bobby 1st place, Zakky 2nd place (controversially disqualified for eye gouging while sinking in a rear naked choke & ahead by 12 points) & Jake 2nd place. In the teens division, Jason 3rd place, a great result in his first comp after being injured & not training for several weeks. Adults division, Abdul 1st place & Ryan going down on points in his first match.
Also well done to all the white belts that graded on monday night, your new grades will be updated on the website shortly.

Tournament Results

A quick re-cap of the great results achieved by our athletes at todays ISKA tournament. Due to limited numbers all our junior competitors fought in heavier & older age groups, being out weighed by up to 10kg & 3years. Bobby Azimi 2nd place, Zakky Azimi 3rd place, Jake Farnsworth 2nd place & Michael Brown 4th place. Awesome effort guys against much bigger & older opponents.

All adults achieved fantastic results with most being first time competitors. Lorando 1st place winning his final match with an awesome flying armbar, Thomas 2nd place, Chris B 2nd place, Luke P 3rd place & just going down by 3 points in an exhibition bout against a very formidable grappling instructor & former world Judo champion. Joey 1st place in the amateur MMA winning his match by guillotine submission from mount.

All our guys entered last minute & still managed to take most of the honours, imagine if we actually trained for it. All in all a fantastic day & as usual I was very impressed with the humble way our athletes go about there business.

The Move In

The move back in went very smoothly with many thanks to all that helped. Budokan will be finishing off this week putting carpet down & posters up, just in time for the John Will seminar next weekend.
It was great to see so many enthusiastic people straight back to training. We were all so keen, last night we just wrestled non stop for a full hour. We utilised handicapped wrestling which involves taking one or several limbs out of the equation including closing one or both eyes. I really like this type of wrestling,
not only is it fun to do something a little different, it also requires improvisation and re-invention of your game. Just as you would have to if you, for argument sake, had an injury.
As human beings we generally tend to stick to what we are good at and miss out on some great self discovery that exploring the unknown brings. In Jiu-Jitsu terms, if you are an on top guard passing type,
try pulling guard or working from underneath and vise-versa if you are a bottom player. I guaranty you will reap the many benefits that this sort of mentality will bring to your training.

Happy Training
Coach Simon

The Pack Up

Thank you to the following people that helped with the big pack up of the Horticulture Pavilion, Dave & Jason Ward, Adam Brown, Jordan & Jake.
As usual Budokan supplied most of the move out crew & thanks to some prior work done by Budokan members the move out & set up of the horticulture display stands went very smoothly & we were finished
by 8:30.
The move back in on Tuesday the 5th is a much bigger job so we really need as many people as possible.
The mat area supplied to us is a world class facility & we are very lucky to have use of it. So please make
the effort to come & help out.

See you there.

The time has come again that we have to pack up the hall for the Castle Hill Show. This is an unwanted interruption but something we have to do as part of our lease agreement.

The big pack up: Thursday 24/03/11 from 6:30pm, As many numbers as possible needed.

Move back in: Tuesday 05/4/11 from 6:30pm, As many people as possible also needed.

That means no training on the following dates 25/03/11, 28/03/11, 30/03/11, 01/047/11 & 04/04/11. Training will recommence as normal on Wednesday 06/04/11.

Comp. Results

Well done to all our club members that entered the ISKA comp last weekend with great success.

Kids division: Bobby Azimi 1st place with two nice rear naked chokes, Zakky Azimi 3rd place going down on points in his semi final match in the last few seconds against the winner of his division. Jake Farnsworth 1st place by default, Jake has moved up an age group this year & is finding it hard to get opponents his weight.

Adult division: Rob Sabaruddin 1st place no gi, 2nd place gi. Unfortunately there was no opponent for Rob (again) in the MMA, Andre Powell 3rd place no gi, securing his long awaited competition submission in his second match, Ara Aroutiounian 4th place no gi, locking in a nice submission in his first match & a solid points win in his second & still only 17 years old. Tim Horn 4th place, in his first comp Tim locked on a beautiful triangle choke in 16 seconds of his first match & then had an awesome controversial match against a much bigger (shouldn't even have been in the same division) opponent that ended in a neck crank, yes thats right an illegal technique. All in all some very good results from everyone involved.

See you on the mat
Coach Simon

Next Comp.

ISKA 13/03/2011, divisions include gi, no gi & amateur MMA.

Robs opponent has pulled out & left him without a fight next weekend. Very disappointing for us after all
his preparation, just means he will be even better next time.

ADCC Trials

Rob, Andrew & Andre all competed at the recent 2011 ADCC trials in Melbourne. The guy's all  went out in their first matches after coming up against the top Black & Brown belt submission grapplers in country.

Only the best competitors in the country enter this comp, so it was great performance & experience for our
three competitors as they are still only blue belts. In the years to come I'm sure all three have the potential to
take the crown.

Great effort guy's
Coach Simon

UCA'S first MMA BLACK BELTS crowned

At the end of year grading I had the pleasure of crowning our first MMA black belts. After a grading that went for several weeks and included taking classes, sparring, street wise self defence and demonstrating a sound knowledge of all the elements of MMA ranging from striking, clinch fighting, wrestling, ground work and more importantly how to blend it all together. I was elated to award Luke Farnsworth and Robert Sabaruddin with their Black Belts.

Luke, forever the fitness fanatic, has been training in various styles since the early eighties and brings a vast array of knowledge and experience to our mat. A top competitor in his day, Luke has won and placed in many Jiu-Jitsu competitions and fought in sports Ju-Jitsu. Luke can be found on our mat regularly as both student and instructor and after many years of training still shows great enthusiasm and has a never ending thirst for self improvement.

Rob, the young gun, is a fierce competitor and always a force to be reckoned with. His natural athleticism and extreme work rate are simply amazing. Over the last few years he has stacked up a very impressive resume, including, amateur and pro MMA fights, state and national Pankration titles, national BJJ gi and no gi titles and winning nearly all his BJJ matches in the last two years via submission. A stunning performance from a highly skilled athlete, Rob is truly inspirational.

Well done guys, we might not where our MMA belts on the mat but rest assured you are both extremely worthy recipients of the great honour that is the Black Belt.

New Blue Belts

Well done to all that participated in the end of year grading. It was a great night with twenty five new grades being awarded including two special MMA grades, more on that next post.
Grading nights are always a great occasion as it brings many of the club members together and the lead up always gives extra focus and direction to your training.
As always the spotlight was on the people contesting the blue belt grading. Guido Schultz and Chris Fletcher were on the mat for the duration and performed the 38 techniques required for blue belt with great composure and continued with a grueling 25 minutes of wrestling with various ranks ranging from white to black belt.
Guido, a highly decorated Judo black belt, showed fantastic grappling skills churning out round after round of extremely technical Jiu-Jitsu. Showing that he is truly worthy of his rank and is now a very cherished member of our club.
Chris, also a very highly decorated martial artist, displayed what the blue belt grading is all about, a technical level good enough to competently look after yourself against any assailant and to be able to hold his own against anyone on the mat. Maybe more importantly he displayed a never give up attitude, spirit and determination.
Well done guy's you are both both very important members of BJJ family.
Also a special mention to Aggasi for his expertise on the BBQ and to everyone that has consistently showed up this year. I'm so proud of the fantastic culture on our mat, you make BJJ Castle Hill what it is.

Have a great holiday season and I look forward to seeing everyone early in the new year.
Coach Simon

Sparring at Langes MMA

Friday night myself, John & Rob made the trek to my good friend & longtime coaches gym Langes MMA for the friday night fighters class. The class is run by Chad Lumley, a very skillful striker that understands how to blend for MMA & the order of the day is non stop sparring.
I did as many rounds as I could before my knee, still recovering from surgery, turned to jelly. So I opted to stop, maybe you do get wiser with age?
John & Rob kept going, as fighters have to & finished off the session exhausted after a grueling workout with
Chad.
All in all a great night for me catching up with some old friends & awesome effort put in by John & Rob.

Competition Results

Well done to all the kids that competed at the recent ISKA BJJ comp with some great results.
Lleyton Smith 1st place, Bobby Azimi 2nd place, Bailey Don 3rd place and a great effort by Kai Don

Great results boys & just deserves for all your hard training, keep up the good work.

New Brown Belt in the House

Last night I took great pleasure in awarding Luke Farnsworth with his Brown Belt in BJJ. Luke started grappling with me in the mid nineties when BJJ wasn't so fashionable in Australia & made the journey to Anthony Lange's club in Manly for many years.
He also had much success as a heavyweight competitor & has trained & grappled with many legendary fighters.

Luke's raw strength & lack of mistakes on the mat make him a very formidable brown belt. His grading also coincided with his 40th birthday making for a very surprising & well deserved present.

The Colour Black

Eighteen BJJ black belt on one mat in Australia at the same time is quite incredible. Thats the sought of respect Rigan Machado commands and as usual his annual seminar was a huge success.
When thinking about the qualities of a Black Belt I must say Rigan certainly leads the way. I could go on about his technical brilliance or his many titles as a competitor, but more impressive to me is the way he holds himself as a human being. Rigan goes out of his way to talk and have photos with anyone at the comp or seminar and alway takes a special interest in Jake. A more humble man you will never find, a very refreshing change when compared to some of his counterparts.
The seminar focused on grip disengagement and guard transitions and unlike other years Rigan worked us out quite hard and gave us a chance to do some guard wrestling with several other particapants.
A major highlight for me personally was working with my BJJ coach Anthony Lange and good friends and fellow black belts Peter King
and Darko Zaric.
I've attached an interesting photo, as pointed out by John Will. Four Generations of BJJ black belts on the same mat. A very rare sight anywhere in the world. Myself, my coach Anthony Lange, Anthony's coach John Will and John's coach Rigan Machado.

Team Castle Hill Brings Home the Medals

With the Machado nationals been & gone for another year, it's time to reflect on the awesome performances of our athletes.
365 competitors made there way to the Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre for what is by far the biggest & best BJJ comp in Australia. With six mats running the day went very smoothly & full credit must go to John Will & his wife Melissa for such good organisation.
Jake Farnsworth was on a mission this year to avenge his lose in 2009 & re-capture his title. He did it in fine style, quickly submitting all three opponents with kimuras to take 1st place in the (open belt) 27-30.5kg division.

Next up was Ara Aroutiounian, dominating & submitting his first opponent with a nicely executed kimura from side control. Ara won his next match convincingly on points & then fought a very close & intelligent final match to take 1st place in the (open belt) 16-17years 79-84kg division.

Robert Sabaruddin faced some very talented opposition & once again his quality shone through. Submitting his first opponent from north-south with a reverse guillotine & his second opponent with a rear naked choke to take 1st place in the blue belt 57.5-64kg division.

Not meaning to put any pressure on Andrew Fu but there was a common theme starting to develop amongst our athletes.
Andrew put on a great performance winning his first two matches via points with some wonderful strategic Jiu-Jitsu. The final was always going to be tough going up against a seemingly fresh opponent that had only had one match while Andrew had all three
matches in under half an hour. Still no excuses, thats the luck of the draw. Andrew fought a tough match & went down on points to take 2nd place in the blue belt 82-88kg division.

Overall an absolutely awesome result by all 4 competitors, 11 matches, 10 wins,  6 submissions, 3 golds, 1 silver.
Well done guys for representing our club so well & displaying such good technical JIu-Jitsu. We must be doing something right, you simply don't get those sought of results by chance.

Rob in Tuffa 6

After a year out of the MMA scene Robert Sabaruddin stepped up for his second pro MMA match at Tuffa 6 on Saturday night. Although suffering from a little fight rust, Rob went straight in for the kill scoring several takedowns in a very exciting first round, in which both fighter showed good Jiu-Jitsu skills & had opportunities to finish the fight.
Round 2 started in much the same fashion, Rob shooting in for a well executed takedown. Positioning his opponent against the cage & carrying out some grueling ground & pound that nearly finished the fight. In a good show of strength & heart his opponent was able to reverse the position & sink in a rear naked choke that ended the fight.
Although a disappointing result, this was a great peformance from Rob & certainly has his name buzzing amongst promoters & spectators alike.
Not to be forgotten that Rob was fighting up a weight class from his natural weight let alone his cutting weight & fighting a guy coming down a weight class that didn't even make weight.
Well done Rob, you are a true warrior. We are all very proud of you.
